If you happened to drive towards Bolderwood from Emery Down, you'd probably end up noticing this odd structure on the side of the road. I've done that countless times but decided to have a little look into why it's there. (click the wiki link if you'd like a fuller explanation). Known as the Portuguese Fireplace (and sometimes the Canadian fireplace), this is the remaining trace of a camp that was started shortly after the beginning of World War 1. There used to be a plaque beside it, which read:"This is the site of a hutted camp occupied by a Portuguese army unit during the first World War. This unit assisted the depleted local labour force in producing timber for the war effort. The Forestry Commission have retained the fireplace from the cookhouse as a memorial to the men who lived and worked here and acknowledge the financial assistance of the Portuguese government in its renovation.", although it appears to have gone missing.
